Quote: Domain, I equally like raw and slabbed coins. I have a PCGS set and a Dansco album set. I'm working on my second Dansco set right now. For the PCGS set, I started out by assembling a "major variety" set, which is comprised of 34 coins. I then decided to attempt the "complete variety" set, which is comprised of 42 coins. This extended set includes all the DDO ("FS" designated) coins, the Friendly Eagle, Peg Leg, and the 1971-S/S FS-501 RPM. Here is what my MAJOR variety set looks like in the flesh: Thank you for the encouragement. Question; would you just pay up and go with PCGS? I am sure I know little in this area, But I have reasonable feelings the best of my coins will have little problems going as high as MS63 - MS64 maybe a better few. who knows? Currently I am very un-organized and mostly just placing "BU" coins in tubes. Then getting rid of the CIR Only thing really going for me now, is I have been able to get coins at face.

Darth Morgan-almost wish I had not seem your PCGS set, it has flung another craving on me. I don't need another set to take my attention away from my other incomplete sets. Yours looks great!

If I understand it correctly, you were very successful at acquiring many coins at a surprisingly affordable prices. Am I correct to say you buy 'em raw ... then you slab them? If that is correct, the slabbing cost (sometimes) is more that the cost of the coin? Can I correctly say, you bought nothing at face? I sincerely hope you stay on THIS thread. Hoping to learn from you. I am going back now to study more, so I can ask you more little questions.

Do you just sell them and try again for the desired coin-grade? I am soooo excited at this time. I need to think ahead (for my own needs) in order to stay on my budget. Question: Have you ever thought about going into ERROR ikes as an addition to your collection? I sincerely hope this question does not offend you in ANY way. I am aware that many folks, just do not like freaks. For one thing ... there is no way to grade freaks. I can just see it now ... my Ike is more mutilated than yours.

I would go with either PCGS or NGC. It's up to you, though. ANACS is also good, and I believe their grading to be equal to NGC and PCGS. Another good thing about ANACS is that they recognize far more Ike varieties than anyone else. I just don't like their slabs. Honestly, the only reason I went with PCGS on my Ike set was because I wanted a little variety in my collection. I prefer NGC to PCGS ONLY slightly because I simply prefer NGC's slab. However, I find myself liking the PCGS slabs more and more. I really like the new 3D Dupont hologram that they introduced this year. It serves a good purpose, and it is aesthetically appealing. I purchased all 34 coins on ebay, and all of them were already graded. This is definitely the way to go. If you buy all the coins raw and send them in for grading you may very well end up spending much more on the collection overall. Unless, of course, you send them in all at once. That would at least save on shipping. I'm not sure what PCGS charges, but the cheapest way for Moderns through NGC is $17.00 per coin, I think. That's $578. Then again, you may not get the grades you desire either. If you buy them already slabbed, then at least you know what you're getting grade-wise. Also, don't just buy a grade. Make sure you really like the coin itself and that it has great eye appeal. That means more to me than the grade. Quote: Can I correctly say, you bought nothing at face?
I have never, ever bought a single Ike dollar at face value. I envy all the members here who are able to get them this way, especially those who are able to obtain BAGS of them. No, this does not offend me in the least bit. Yes, I have considered this. In fact, I already have my first Ike ERROR coin. It was part of the collection my dad gave to me in the summer of 2011. It was still sealed in the original mint cellophane. It was Struck Through Grease. I'm going to send this one in to NGC for grading along with some Morgans sometime this year. Here are the pics: As you can see in this photo, the reverse was not affected: Again, I would highly recommend starting a graded set of Ikes. It was a fun and educational experience for me.

Awesome posts and pics Domain & Darth More later, but, wanted to show my latest ERROR...the seller had JUST pulled this 76-D T-1 IKE from a mint sleeve, and into flip...when I asked, he gave me the cello to look for hitmarks, which were zippo, ruling out Post-Mint Damage...I showed the Coin to Jim Cauley and Lee Gong, and, both are leaning towards struck through scrap, perhaps sheared off reeding....THIS baby is going to anacs for full error label. While obverse show some scraping from most likely mint bagging/shipment, the reverse does NOT, anywhere near, in, or around the gouges, thus, the struck through theory...if a defective planchet, metal flow would show into the gouge, and, I see no flow lines...inside the gouge appears to be lines that match to reeding lines..Jim thinks part of the reeded edge from another coin sheared off, and was smashed into this one...neato..and, if so, rare.

Had ... may still have one with this sort of "marking" Studied it for "hours" Didn't know what it was... Will see if I dumped or put it back into one of my ERROR tubes

I would rather add that coin to my collection, than a MS+++++ 1976 type 2 I always was a push over for the non-traditional stuff.
