Time for another registry set upgrade: 1972-D PCGS MS66. This one is so smooth and clean it's ridiculous. It's SOLID for the grade and would green bean without a doubt in my mind.

I won't post a photo but a memory ; 1971, when these coins appeared for circulation and the ruckus over the pricing of the 40% silver issues. As a collector, I was happy to have something reminiscent of the classic silver dollar to spend and did so as long as I could get nice BU's from the bank. I also like the looks of the 71-D JFK struck in clad with that bizarre halo present on so many specimens and the overall different look of the coin ; they were easy to obtain as BU rolls.

Ouch! I hate when the loss is so minimal

From time to time I watch my parents house (my childhood home) while they gleefully wipe out my inheritance traveling the world in retirement. Kudos to them. This winter I decided since I am never going to pay them back the lifetime of "I'll totally pay you back loans", I make up for that by attempting end decades long intractable spousal standoffs about various unresolvable home projects like—-I want the basement clean/but it's all your stuff so go ahead/not until it's clean, etc.

impossible conclusion, right? Nope. While they are in Kauai, I rented a roll-off, threw 90% of the stuff out, saved amazing family history from rot, and scored two rolls of Morgan/Peace dollars (43 all told) & one Ike that apparently yours truly collected with my Grandma & Grandpa. Cool. Not unusual.

Flash forward last weekend. Off to an Alaskan cruise they go. The basement is exactly the same as I left. The battle was clearly all. But what the heck, I tackle the attic. I like digging. This time, amongst billions of Homer Hankeys and 1984 Olympic-themed unopened Wheaties boxes (gross), I should've known what any 44-year-old would find in a molding American Tourist luggage box—-a pile of almost filled blue coin books and a unmistakable indication that I LIKE IKE was heard at my Grandparents. Blue Ikes, Brown Ike, Proof Ikes, Bicentennial Ikes, Clad Ikes, Silver Ikes, Mint Sets, Proof Sets. So now what?

I go to you good people and I am soon 200 deep into something I never thought about before. Weekend comes and now I am quite familiar with a thing named simply The Ike Group..

All the OGP has a sickening musty odor on my desk so I make a bold decision and liberate every single Ike and Ike trooper from their tomb. I buy some Mylar, borrow my friends vacuum sealer, and go to town.

Late last night I finish, pass out, wake up and go be a UPS trucker while my desk is cluttered with universally silver Ikes as far as the eye can see. It's cloudy this morning so I had my lamp next to my desk on and sure enough, forgot to turn it off running out at 7am.

NOW—-next is what none of any of anything told me. The 50+ headed hydra of Ikes who hadn't seen light in, ohhh, 30 years, CAME ALIVE. Good Lord, what the heck happened in one day? My desk exploded with tone and I sit here writing too long story to tell you all how incredibly stunning, what I derisively dismissed 24 hours early as a diehard silver man of a day, a toned big gaudy militaristic Ike looks like at night.

Lucky man, I am. Thanks Gramps. Missed you since 85. And thanks forum, this has been an outstanding week.

Very good story and I bet you likely made jbucks day. And one bit of advice - don't stare to long at the IKES else you become hypnotized and addicted. They will hook you with their beauty for sure. Great post

Now, you guys may get tired of hearing about those pesky proof planchet 71-Ds, but I have to tell ya that I got another one. Mr. Kadlac listed this one as well, and it came from the same roll as the previous group!

A super glossy GEM to be sure. I took these obverse/reverse shots with a different lighting setup (full, direct light from 5 Jansjos!) to showcase the slick bust, and it's a Talon Head to boot. And as Stewart stated in an earlier post, you can see die wear and imperfections but NO annealing chatter. These have such a unique appearance. In the slab shot, you can see that the coin itself photographs like a proof with indirect lighting. It looks very dark, but smooth. Keep hunting, guys!

Today I pulled the trigger on a 1976 Variety 1 to complete the eight coin run of Bicentennial Ikes.

After I get it, I will probably post it in the grading forum first to see how I did. Then I will show him here.
