Post An Ike (Eisenhower Dollar)

This week I acquired yet another 1971-S "Nightcrawler" Ike. Now I can finally showcase this elusive variety in my official registry set.




There was another one listed on ebay this past week. It was sold RAW. I placed the last active bid at $150, but someone else knew too. It jumped from $10.50 to $152.50 in the last few seconds.

That's a gorgeous example! The Ike is by far my favorite modern coin - flawless design in my opinion. Imagine a thousand years from now when archaeologists unearth a hoard of Ikes - what will they think of an eagle on the moon...? Will they remember that we once had a space program or will it just be a fable?

I haven't willingly purchased artificially toned Ikes before, but recently I purchased a 3-coin lot containing this 1972-D - a real roller line beauty. Those striations are BOLD, the boldest I've ever seen on an Ike. It still exhibits decent cartwheel luster too. I took the lot just to get this one coin.







Here's the 74-D and 77-D also included in the lot. I must admit- I like the 77-D a lot.

For Christmas my wife got me the 8176 Dansco Album so I can finally get the coins out of the 2x2's. Only have ten to go which I'll knock out half of those come payday! I also need to upgrade the 71 P&D as well as the 72 P&D to uncirculated coins.

A week or so ago I found one on ebay for $25 & free shipping. I showed it to her and she handed me $25 and said Merry Christmas!

Registry set upgrade time again! This time it's the most common of all Ike Dollars- the 1976 Type 2, with 113,318,000 minted. That's a HUGE number, but finding a really nice example is tough for this issue. Mine is a nicely golden toned specimen in MS66. Incredibly, there are a handful of these in MS67, but I'll be just fine with my 66. It fits nicely into my set.

Between PCGS and NGC there are less than 1000 of these in 66 or better. That's 0.00086% of the total minted! One is quick to realize that these are not easily found in the wild.

CAC & QA approved, and for good reason. The 1973-P rarely comes this nice.
