Modified-Obverse,-New-Reverse,-Same-Old-Zincoln...

I pulled this one out of one of the rolls I got in Springfield, it was the only bad one out of 50 but it is nasty. Looks like Lincoln could use some Clearasil for those zinc zits
I have also noticed that the majority of them have parallel planchet striations(those are not scratches)

Just when I thought they had that palting issue under control. The striations are classic Zincoln!

Where's the reverse?

The reverse is just fine and looks like any other Shield rev so I didn't image it but I figured the obverse was worthy of showing. One note of improvement is that there seems to be less rinse spots on the planchets this year. They are still there but fewer in number and less black as compared to some of last years issues.

The obverse portrait is a 100% improvement over the previous version.

Frankly I see very little change in the obverse portrait, and it looks a lot more like the recent portraits than it does the 1909 version.

The rinse spots are ridiculous and they turn green in short order. I hope Bio6 is right about them getting it under control. Those palting issues Thad points out are horrible and so are the plating problems. Sorry Thad. ;) What I really wonder is with the splitting copper and early demise of coins from rot, are they really saving money over the cost of copper. These cannot stay in circulation nearly as long as the old copper. IMHO Jim

The much faster attrition of zinc Cents certainly eats up a lot of the
potential savings. Corroded zinc Cents can even damage other coins,
all of which are denominations exceeding One Cent (think about the
additional costs there!).

On a positive note, this is why we were able to get 2009 Cents, unlike
the very rare 2009-P Nickels/Dimes and the not-yet-released 2009-D
Nickels/Dimes. The fast attrition rate of zinc Cents ensured that a
certain quantity of 2009 Cents simply had to be distributed for
circulation! ( or to hoarders... )

HAHAHAHA...interesting theory DNA. However, the new anti-corrosion treatment they are using is very, very good. I know the guy that sells them the particular chemical they are using. The mint has their own metalworking product formulation department. We've also experimented with it, great stuff. Don't ask me what it is, it'd be inappropriate for me to disclose it.

Under controlled storage, these treated coins will keep for years and almost indefinately. I'm 99.9% sure the black spotting we see on the coins is from this final rinse/treatment. It's not the chemical itself, but a dirty, recirculated, product mix from the sump they rinse with. I see this everyday at work for all metals. Over time, the sump starts having problems, i.e. bacteria, mix concentration variation, hardness, ions, tramp oil, calcium/magnesium soap formation, etc. All of these contribute to forming those spots on the coins. The cleanest coins will be made when the sump has been recently cleaned and recharged with fresh product. I suspect it's a fairly small run of coins before the sump gets contaminated again because most of the coins have black spots.
