Went to a recent coin show with desire to sell a 1895o to pursue my other collection and I was told to lay low and keep my coin locked up for awhile because the market was,"SOFT". What is a soft market and why is it soft? Yes, I'm a new collector and trying to learn all that I can.

Soft market = more inventory than interest.

The coin market hasn't quite rebounded from the glory years of 2005-2008. Folks don't have as much disposable income and are spending less on coins. Recent national shows indicate an upturn, but we are no where near where we were just two years ago. The advice you got was from someone who thinks it could be a lot better.

With the economy being what it is the prices of things like coins tend to be lower because of the lower demand for non-necessities hence the word soft.Demand is low so prices are low.He was saying to hold off for a while until things get better and you could demand a higher price.

I work in a coin shop and can vouch that numismatics are indeed soft compared to a couple years ago. The demand just isn't there, and it's hardly exclusive to coins. Any collectible/hobby will be affected in an economic downturn like we're in. Whether it's numismatics, stamps, baseball cards, etc, people just aren't spending as much. People are worried about their jobs and putting food on the table and keeping a roof over their head, so collectible and hobby type stuff goes to the backburner.

Right now it's more of a buyer's market versus a seller's market due to the economy, so now is when deals can be had.

From talking to another dealer in town, he said that the market for silver dollars was very soft other than the common circulated ones being bought more for the silver content.

Being new to the hobby, but having watched from afar for a couple of years, I do think I"ve been able to wrangle some good deals in the current market. At the same time, I've sold some stuff for a few bucks less than I could have last year.

It would have been much easier to simply ask the person who told you that the market was soft what he actually meant by that.

For Andrew289:
I did ask the person who told me the market was soft,(he "WAS" a dealer), and he himself said that he wasn't sure why. And so, here I am asking, and myself, being new in coin collections, seeking answers from experienced collectors. Thats why I like this group of collectors. "One hugh group of experience" I can tap into.
