Hello,

I'm currently collecting ASE Bullion Coins and trying to learn about these coins. All I have found so far is this Wikipedia article, but is it accurate?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Silver_Eagle

Thanks,
Rich

Wikipedia is as accurate as any data source where you don't have to know anything about the subject to contribute. I believe Wikipedia only when it agrees with what I already know.

I view Wikipedia articles like term papers. Always check the references!

There are footnotes on most of the articles:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Americ..._Eagle#Notes

Many of the references are to published (printed) sources, so it might require a trip to the library to verify them.

But a lot of them are online, so be cautious of where they link to. That is, decided how trustworthy the source is.

I'm a bit off-topic but Wikipedia is great for researching currently or recently circulating coins and currency. Usually there are some great photos. For example, check out the Banknotes of Zimbabwe page:

Those are basically a great source for information. Pending on how much you want to know about anything, Google is also sort of great.
For example if you go to Google and type in American Silver Eagles, you get this:
Results 1 - 10 of about 728,000 for american silver eagle coins.
I know that many are just advertisements but if you really want to learn about them, after 728,000 items, you should be quite the expert. That's the good news.
Now here is the bad news. If you took 5 minutes to check out each of those you would have spent 3,640,000 Minutes or 60,666.667 hours or 2,527.778 days if continuous for 24/7. Even worse is if people added more while doing this.
Have fun.

LOL carl!

I find Wikipedia to be relatively accurate most of the time. The rules for editing the content have changed dramatically over the years and is organized by some knowledgeable people. That said, nothing is 100% foolproof. I generally use Wikipedia as a starting point for a brief overview of the subject. Then I move on to other sources to better verify information and/or find more accurate info.

This is, I believe, good advice for any topic, be it numismatic or not.
