I purchased a box of dimes yesterday to see if I might find some silver, 2009's or some cool errors. After spending a few hours going through about $70 worth, all I can think is OMG what did I sign up for? This is the most boring thing I have tried to move through. It's a lot like driving through a desert where there's nothing of interest anywhere for many miles. So far I have found some with quite a bit of extra metal lumps around the mouth and eye of Roosevelt, 2 really perfect clean uncs and several small spikes coming off of the bottom of the torch. It things don't get just a little more interesting soon, I may just turn them back in and start down a different road. The mint needs to do something to change the poor old dime in some way. I almost don't care what changes they would consider but for gods sake, change something. Oh well. I will continue and hope for some excitement. Meanwhile I will not be holding my breath on the hopes for excitement from the least exciting coin in the US circulating offering.

i just look at the edges for silver and pick out the really new looking edges banking that the 2009 will stand out. the silvers are almost impossible to miss scanning the edges. 2 boxes one silver. good luck, you will feel better when you get a silver one.

Why did you ever think it was a good idea to search dimes? yikes ..talk about a snipe hunt.
That's almost as crazy as searching quarters ..but not quite.

I should have chosen snipe. It was a change from the cents and nickels. I like a challenge but talk about boring.

And here I was, considering the same thing soon ! After hearing of your "Ol' College try" with Dimes....I'm going to reconsider ! I did try my " first" box of quarters recently, and if you read my post, THEY WERE ALL 2009 D MINT DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA ! ....THE WHOLE BOX.....ALL BU ! .....mailed out quite a few to those who were interested.....kept some for myself...and turned them back in to the bank (after looking through them for the known error.....which I didn't find !) .. So......I'm STILL gonna do another box of quarters, just for the heck of it.......it should be a nice change of pace from the Cents and Nickels....but I'm not expecting any key or semi-key dates or any Silver whatsoever actually..... or even the odd foreign qtr......just some "P" mints that I'm lacking would be fine. Keep in mind that for the next 10 years of the "State Parks" qtr. program, that this will be the ONLY way to score biz. strikes of these, (except by Direct Ship....or the expensive two roll sets.....which I won't do "either" of these options) So, I might have to do qtr. boxes in the future still.......just to fill some holes !But "DIMES" .......yeah......you've now cured me of the desire to order of box ! ....

Dimes are GOOD, I guess it depends on who has rolled them and put back into circulation. I recently purchased 50.00 from the bank that the grade school down the road had turned in from the soda machine's and found (SILVER) a couple D/D and some interesting errors, when I get time I'll post pic's.

Holycrap - eaglefoot, this thread reminded me that I didn't send your $$ for those two rolls. I'm sorry for the oversight!!
Gent - I've considered searching dimes, but tried 5 rolls as a test and quickly realized I wasn't ready to do that to myself again.

Gent, best on your quest. Dimes are just too small for my eye sight.
Eaglefoot, FWIW, On the park qtr's - check with the smaller banks in your area. I have found one near me that PROBABLY will be getting the qtr's as they come out. I cleaned out the last of their 09 territory qtr's (they had 8 rolls).
For some reason some banks are NOT eligible per one of the tellers going forward.
Peace

I searched one box of dimes a few months back and found one silver roosie, but they're just too much of a pain to do more. I sorta proved to myself that you could find silver and that was enough!

Dimes are ok if you get a brinks box (clear plastic wrap). You can tell in about 15 seconds if you have any silver!

Ceylon62.... It is my understanding that banks were "issued" the 50 State qtrs & Territories, but that they will not be "issued" the State Parks qtrs.

That is my understanding too. Therefore I'll buy from the mint and pay the surcharge.

I've been searching more boxes of dimes recently. I have searched 1/3 of a box that I picked up today from my local TCF bank. In one roll I found 2 silver dimes, 59 & 63-D. Whether or not I find anymore silver in the rest of the box is anyone's guess. In the past I have found about 3 or 4 other dimes in boxes and loose rolls, including a 1907 Barber. In my previous box of dimes I found a 2009-P, thus giving me more motive to search dimes. I also found a few early clads in higher grades to upgrade my collection with.
I certainly do agree with others that searching dimes and quarters aren't nearly as rewarding as pennies and nickels. Since wheat pennies and pre-1960 Jeffersons are guaranteed finds in boxes of pennies and nickels respectively, searching them feels like strip mining. Dimes and quarters, on the other hand, feel like fishing. It just takes a lot more patience. Boxes of halves feel like they're somewhere between the two.
