Question from a newbie here. I appreciate your assistance.
Recently I noted the following designations with regard to the annual mintage of a coin in a coin publication:
Date..........Mintage 1920/10.....xxxxxx 1920..........Inc above
What is the meaning of 1920/10? Does it refer to all coins minted by the tenth month of that year?
Thanks much, Ged Edited by ged 02/24/2010 4:59 pm

For that particular entry, it would mean that an overdate coin exists - there is a faint "1" (or a small piece of a "1") visible underneath the "2" of 1920. Since it's assumed coins made from overdated dies were struck early in the year (using dies made or modified from an old master die from the previous decade) it's listed first, but the exact mintages for the overdate and non-overdate coins are unknown; only the grand total for the year, which includes both the overdate and regular coins, is known.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

20/10 means that you can see different date doubling (in this case, 1920 over 1920) in the dates. (hope this clears it up, I'm a kid so I cant explain it that well)

Thank you Sap and lafaa123, your responses are very informative for me.
In general, what, if any, is the effect on coin value of an overdate?
Thanks again, Ged

It really depends on the coin. For a 20th century US issue, an overdate(technically a Class 3 doubled die as a true overdate is not possible for 20th century issues) is generally a rare coin worth big bucks. For a foreign coin, it may be even more common than a coin with a normal date.

usually, U.S. coins with overdates are worth more than the regular coin
