Why doesn't the Mint slab coins? They could easily take the first 100 strikes, and carefully place them in a slab and sell them for a small fortune. Or do they do this already.

The mint is already making a fortune every day.

They probably just haven't thought of your idea yet.

Actually the French mint has already done so with the 2005 Victory 1.5 Euro coins. There was an agreement that the French mint would allow PCGS to slab such coins as for a trial experiment.

Well the way I see it the governement (the Mint) would have to hire graders and it would be another cost to the taxpayers and it would also be very embarrassing for the Mint when their own hired graders gave them anything less than a Proof 70 or MS-70. Don't believe it would be to their advantage to do such a thing.

I might add a note concerning the French $1.50 silver euro commemoratives that were slabbed by PCGS. I was the FIRST U.S. citizen to inquire about placing an order. They confirmed this twice in a two week period and after paying an outlandish fee for the slabs ($99.00) each I received serial number #132 and #133. It seems the real low numbers brought bribe money (would that be the word) when someone offers $600.00 for the #1? Even though I was first in line apparently friends and higher ups with more pull managed to push me that far down the list. Will I do it again? NOT in this lifetime! Only good thing that came out of all of it was the fact PCGS misprinted the label on one of them so its dated in 20004!

Crystalk64, 20,004 has to be the most modern coin ever. I'm glad it's slabbed as you can be guaranteed it's real and authentic! LOL.

I would really like to see the time machine they used to go get it? I want to borrow it to go back to the mid-1880's and do a little coin collecting from that time period and then come back. You know it just dawned on me I will probably have to rob banks with an outlaw band to get what I need as I don't think they will take my check, credit card, money order or cash? I have myself a huge bunch of obstacles and I haven't even left yet? Guess that will give me the opportunity to wear that buffalo hunting outfit again!!! Now where's that time machine?

I bought one of the coins when I was in France (Normandy Beaches) last month. Didn't realize some had been slabbed.

Yes, the first 200 of the gold and silver were removed from the coin press, placed in serial numbered containers by the Director of the French Mint and a representitive of PCGS, flown to the U.S. for grading and encapsulation. I might point out the director of the French Mint also signed the info card in the slab so getting my 20004 dated slab corrected would be almost impossible. None the less I like the coins but disagreed with the way PCGS and their 3rd party seller handled the disposition of the coins. I can understand taking the $600 for #1 and #2 but how in the world did I end up as #132 and #133 when I was the first to call? Guess it upsets me as the squeaky wheel (money and the rich) always gets the grease (something to do with greed). I don't know if or when these coins will ever go up in value and quite honestly don't think the French collectors even knew this one went down but have added one to my collection for LONG term (well at least one will stay here) and hopefully will place the other one in another collection in the near future when the market price will reflect a break even possiblilty!
