I found my first 1 cent blank planchet today

How common are these? It looks pretty well circulated as there are a lot of hits on it.

On my most recent Denver Mint tour, blank (copper-plated) 1¢ planchets
were given as souvenirs to the children under 18 years of age upon
their completion of the tour.

DNA, did they have the rim rolled on them? The one I found in circulation had the rim rolled so that may be a way to separate souvenir blanks!

You have Blanks and you have Planchets
Blanks are the stock punch and Planchets have been upset (rimmed)
Blanks are scarcer to come by in circulation.
Rest in Peace

I'm curious, too - I have 4 or 5 planchets that I've removed from CoinStar reject bags.

I have found 6 searching rolls over the last few yrs, 5 that have been thru the up-setting machine (rimmed) and one that is a blank (no rim). Don't know if this gives any help.

Planchets that are unstruck are common , in the overall scheme of things are easy to locate and can actually be bought for about $2.00.

Billions of cents are struck each year and a a percentage of the planchets get through without being struck. Even though the percentage is very small, a small percentage of billions is still a lot of them.

They were blanks, no rim. The Mint guy handing them to the children
correctly called them 'blanks'. They were sealed in clear wrappers.
The kids also got a finished 2009-D LP3 Cent in a clear wrapper.

ok, ok thanks for bursting my bubble everyone! It's a planchet, not a blank to be exact. I happen to be pretty excited, even if they give them to children as DNA pointed out. I bet none of those children have pulled one from circulation, so HAH!

Finished planchets are supposed to be delivered to the Mint from its outside suppliers. Therefore, it's highly unlikely that the Mint was handing out blanks. To my knowledge only a few copper-plated zinc blanks have been reported. Only three off-center cents struck on copper-plated zinc blanks are known.

To add to what Mike Diamond said, the zinc blanks get their rims milled before the copper plating process, that is why it is very difficult to find a copper plated blank instead of a planchet.

I went back and asked: Yes, the souvenirs have the rims (so they're copper-plated planchets), I just didn't see them close-up last time.
I only saw them from a few feet away and in plastic wrap, since I'm not the sort of guy who's gonna grab a kid's Mint souvenir.....
