The metal looks like it was rolled up. Looks like two thin strips, kind of like round hay bails. From the side, I can see light thru them.

I am going to say it's a lamination error. I just found one like that on a 1974 LMC but it is not rolled up like yours is it's flat.

Yea, pretty much what I was thinking. A lamination that got peeled back.

That is a nice lamination peel, those usually get ripped off fairly easily.

Agreed - PMD would have wiped out the strike detail where it peeled.
