Just passed through 4,000 rolls searched (160,000 coins). Following is my latest update on find rates and circulation obsolescence.

For those new to these numbers ..... I am a nickel roll searcher, and consider a 'find' to be any US nickel dated 1959 or earlier.

Soooooo ..... that said ....

Overall Find Rates:

Overall Find Rate is 1.281% .... this equates to one find every 1.95 rolls and, on average, 25.6 finds per $100 box.

Find Rate for 1930's Jefferson is 1 coin every 46.0 rolls.

Find Rate for 1940's Jefferson (exclude War Silver) is one coin every 5.2 rolls.

Find rate for 1950's Jefferson is one coin every 3.6 rolls.

Special Coin Find Rates:

I consider 'special coins' to be any of the following finds ..... Liberty V, Buffalo, War Silver and all of the nine Jefferson circulation strike coins with less than 10 million mintage.

Overall "Special Coin" find rate is 1 special every 1,649 coins .... or one every 41.2 rolls.

Liberty V find rate is 1 every 80,000 coins (found 2)

Buffalo find rate is 1 every 7,273 coins (found 22)

War Silver find rate is 1 every 3,137 coins (found 51)

Key/Semi-Key Jefferson find rate is 1 every 7,273 coins (found 22)

Circulation Obsolescence:

For those new to this concept ..... go here for all you need to know:

https://goccf.com/t/58454

Soooo .... at 4000 rolls searched in my database ....

Circulation Obsolescence for Buffalo nickels is 99.39%

For the circulation strike Jefferson series ....

1930's @ 82.20%
Pre-War 1940's @ 82.19%
War Silver @ 98.08%
Psot-War 1940's @ 77.91%
Early 1950's @ 73.82%
Late 1950's @ 68.20%

Fun with the Numbers:

I do this for enjoyment and the thrill of the roll treasure hunt ..... sooooo ..... to have fun with the numbers ..... two fun questions to be answered from the obsolescence data ...

Question #1: How many Buffalo nickels are in Circulation Today?

Well ..... 99.39% are 'lost' ..... so that means by my latest estimate 0.61% are still around ..... and with a total mintage of 1,212,899,041 ..... there are 7,398,700 Buffalo nickels in circulation today.

Question #2: How many War Silver Nickels are in circulation today?

Well .... 98.08% are 'lost' ..... so that means 1.92% are still around today ..... and with a total mintage of 870 million .... there are 16,660,900 War Silver nickels in circulation today.

Keep those totals in mind the next time you hit a roll-search low.

Hope this helps someone out there.

Enjoy

David

Fair question XOG ..... the answer is three proofs in 4000 rolls.

I have found a 1964, 2001-S and 2005-S (Bison) in my rolls.

Also found a wonderful 1965 SMS with a weird mint error on the reverse ...... will post photos someday after I develop my photo-taking skills.

Soooo ... go search some nickels.
