Is the copper plating split on the D? Looks like zinc corrosion as a result of plating split upon strike...well I guess actually it looks like it could be an RPM in the picture, but the pictures aren't of good enough quality to tell whether it would actually be a RPM or if it's zinc corrosion under the D.

The 2nd photo shows some zinc/gray color on the SE corner of the D which would indicate plating split/corrosion...so that's my official vote. FWIW.

Split in the plating. It happened on a very large number of the coins of the zinc era in the 80's until they stopped placing the mint marks onto the die. Now the mint mark is part of the design from 1990 forward.

You know most of my seriously messed up pennies are 1983 because of all the failed experiments they were doing.

yeah, I've come across quite of few 83's with jacked up mint marks. some look like they've been smashed halfway to the core...
