I collect numismatic errors on a casual basis, so I usually give my change a quick glance when I get it back at the register.

A few days ago I noticed an untarnished penny which seemed to have that sharp edged, concaved look that a lot of pennies minted in the 60's tend to have. When I tool a closer look I noticed it was actually a 1963D penny. It looks like it has only been in circulation for a few weeks. I thought someone just found an old roll of pennies but on closer examination I think it must have been in someone's collection.

LIBERTY is too close to the edge.
The detail on Abraham Lincoln is significantly reduced.
The mint mark is crooked.
(The apparent doubling on the right of Abraham Lincoln is an artifact of the photo)
There is lack of detail on some large portions of the steps and other portions of the Lincoln Memorial, as well as lack of detail in most of the columns.
The initials to the lower right of the Lincoln Memorial are distorted.
The edge at the top of that same side seems too sharp.

I've posted two photos. One taken with a camera:

And one done on the scanner to get higher detail.

So does anyone have any thoughts on what happened?

My Two Cents...I think it's just a result of a badly worn die. From my experience hot uncommon for the 60's.

Could be something more, but that's what I see.

Very common for this year and others around it. Check out a 1968 Cent for the devices near the rims. They all look like that.
