Hello,

Does anyone have any experience in collecting medals? I want to collect the small First Spouse Medals but I can't find any good information about them on the mint's website.

Do the medals have both an obverse and a reverse or just an obverse?

Are medals considered numismatic products and if so why are they not in price guides, is it because they do not appreciate/depreciate in value?

Are dealers less likely to carry medals?

Thanks,
Rich

They do have an obverse and reverse, obverse is the standard bust portrait while the reverse is a depiction of the First Lady's life.

I just checked the US Mint website and am sure that each medal has an obverse and a reverse (see picture below from the US Mint). I purchased a 3" George Washington medal and plan to get a 3" Lincoln medal. The Washington medal looks great in my office. However, I doubt the modern medal has any potential for appreciation.

If you are interested in this topic, you might consider to purchase the Guide Book of American Tokens and Medals. The Wizard Coin Supply sells this book at $14.96.

Hello,

Well I took the "plunge" and bought a 2008 First Spouse 4 Medal Set I found at my local coin shop for $10. You can buy the medals individually for $3.50 per medal from the U.S. Mint.

Anyway, I posted the scans below. They aren't perfect but I think they are beautiful anyway.

I'm going to buy Whitman album for my First Spouse Medal Sets. I'd prefer a Dansco but they do not make a First Spouse Medal Album.

I still do not understand why medals are not in price guides?

Here are the pictures, let me know what you think.

I've been buying them because they are inexpensive & kind of neat. My favorite piece is actually a parody piece of the Thomas Jefferson medal instead of lady liberty it has Sally Hemmings the slave woman with whom Jefferson had children. On the coin it says "An old woman worth $50..." This is a quote from Jeffersons estate.

Well...I also collect medals - George Washington medals. Hopefully I could afford to buy a (1793) Washington success medal, which is listed on the Red Book.

I also have a 1925 Norse Medal issued by the US Mint.
