Bryan, I would have done what you did under the circumstances. Since there were no bids, you had a potential offline buyer who had no knowledge of the ebay auction, and new information came to light about the Morgan, I would have pulled it. The buyer seems to be knowledgeable enough about Morgan VAMs, so he knows what he's getting into. But, unlike you, I would have definitely sold it; I need a new rear axle assembly (both axles, bearings, and differential) for my Jeep Grand Cherokee and need to scrounge up all the loose change I can find.

Bryan, you have an impressive collection of Morgans obviously. How did you come about so many valuable coins ? Have you been collecting for a while or did you score a big load of coins at once ?

You wouldn't believe me if I told you, But I guess I am going to give it a try. I have only been collecting since September of 2005 and I started out with 0 coins in my collection. I started looking and decided I really liked the Morgan dollars so I started purchasing raw morgans from ebay. I thought they were real high grade stuff (you know how you are when you first start out, everything you touch and look at is a MS-65 or better) anyhow I was searching on ebay and I found something I had never seen before in auction, it was a VAM and I was in awe and didnt know what the heck it was but I knew I just had to have it. It was a MS-62 VAM-83 with a High 1 graded by NGC and when I finally received this coin and compared it to my raw coins I knew then I would never buy another raw coin atleast until I had some better skills (which I havent aquired yet)anyway this became the coin that started my #1 registry set of B1 reverse Morgans. At first I didnt quite understand the differences between grading services and I bought one NTC and one PCI Morgan and after comparing them to the NGC and PCGS coins I had then aquired that was supposed to be the same grade I could tell the difference so them coins went back on ebay. So from then on it has been NGC and PCGS with an occasional ANACS coin if it was something I needed for a registry set (they had to be crossed before I could do that) and I started looking at pricing of the coins and I decided that MS-64 was the best Bang For The Buck so that was all I collected and never bought anything under that.I soon joined NGC's Collectors-Society and was able to send in my coins for crossover and could send in some of the better raw coins I had aquired with the 5 free ticket that they gave me for joining. I had 1 bodybag and the rest that I thought were high grade coins werent so high grade, the highest was a MS-62 1891 and the lowest being a 1882 O/S VAM-5 Broken s which was a TOP 100 coin so all wasn't lost. I know this is becoming a long story so I will end it here, but I aquired 100% of my items from internet auctions and none of my morgans were given to me at all. I did however get a pretty large coin collection (well 1/3 of his collection) from my grandfather a couple months ago but I havent even inventoried those to see what was actually in there.So there ya have it and I am proof that it doesn't take a long time to aquire just about a full date set of Morgans in MS-64 condition even if you are limited to internet sales (even though you may have paid a little to much at times, there was times you paid alot less then they were actually worth).

I forgot to mention even though I had aquired the vams in my B1 collection I still didnt quite understand what made them a VAM or even what exactly a VAM really was. I started reading alot of posts by doing a google search and started learning a little (very little) and saw some die cracks in a few pictures and I thought well heck let me look at my coins. I had the 1878 8TF that had a crack going all the way around it and I thought to myself if them little ol cracks they are showing is worth something just think what this massive crack going all the way around is worth, anyway I looked at my 1878 7/8 TF and it had doubling all over it (which I knew was something) I did a search on google again for 1878 7/8TF VAM's and low and behold there was someone asking about the same questions I had so I clicked on it and thats how I found this site. I asked the question about my 8TF morgan after reading his post and replies about his 7/8 TF VAM and then I decided to look at other 8TF's on heritage to see if they had it also, well each and every one of them had this characteristic, so I felt like a real dummy, so I quickly appologized for waisting everyones time and waisting their space and I was told that there is no stupid questions here and I was made to feel at home so I stuck around and kept reading and then I noticed that I had alot of different little things on alot of my coins so I started asking about some of them and then I decided to buy the VAM book and search through them myself. I found that I had quite a few different varieties here in my little collection and I think I asked to make sure each was what I thought it was. Anyway everyone of my VAM's that I have are unattributed except for my B1 reverse Morgans and thanks to the people on this forum they have helped me attribute each and every one of them,and now I feel confident enough to answer other peoples questions about VAM's of different varieties and dates (even though 1878 is my main focus at this time) if I didnt know anything about what they were asking I looked it up and gave them the best answer I had for their question. Maybe someday I will be able to give back some of the knowledge to someone else that everyone on this forum has so graciously given to me
