This was posted in the lincoln roll searchin thread, but I thought it would be better analyzed here.
Found this in a box of cents. I was just wondering what would cause the texture on both sides like this. Also, would whatever caused the weird texture also be responsible for the doubling effect in the "one" on the reverse? This is a 1979 cent, and there are to my knowledge, no known DDRs for this year.

These "rippled" coins are definitely altered outside the Mint, but I don't know exactly what is done to them to acheive this appearance. A rotating wire brush has been the traditional explanation, but I never see scratches on the surface.

the reverse has zero camera shake, the obverse may have a bit in the second pic. I think the first pic is also steady. i'll try more pics, see if I can get a good clear shot of both obverse and reverse.
