Hello,
My father has just bought me a lot off of ebay of coins. What is a good website to go to that is very easy to understand? I have been looking into the value of a 1971-s Lincoln 1c proof 66 and cannot figure it out. I saw one on ebay that was going for almost $70 but there was one difference. That one said it was red. Is that a major difference? I have searched the web quite a bit and cannot figure out what the "red" means and why my graded penny does not say this. Please help!
-Feeling quite dumb and overwhelmed.

***I have moved this thread to the Main Forum to give it more exposure. BTW....welcome to the Community***

first of all THANK YOU for joning our comunity, do not be afraid to post, and may fifty posts come to yu soon! A "red" cent is one without a brown toning. it took me about 2 months to figure that out, but it is something like "white" silver coin.

that is correct, a penny takes on a few stages of toning, when its first minted its called "red" and when it gets a little toning on it its called "red-Brown" and then when it is completely toned (no red showing at all) it is called "brown" . As to why your graded coin doesn't say this well it could be a number of reasons the more than likely reason is that your coin has been graded by a different company and they dont attribute those sayings, mostly all the TOP companies (PCGS, NGC, ANACS) do use those terms so I know you are new and I really hate to ask but since so many new collectors have falln for this one person grading company ploy and since you are saying your father bought them off ebay....what company does it say graded your coin? Once you have answered the question I will be able to tell you more

Edited to add: Oh yeah and Welcome to the forum, we have quite a few cent collectors on this site and even coppercoins from coppercoins.com visits here every now and then to share his knowledge in the cent coins differnt varieties

Hi stowell5005

Welcome to the forum !!

Thats a great thing that your father has done for you,, coin collecting is one of the most intriguing hobbies I have ever been involved in.

Red is a term used for a mint fresh cent,, as the cent ages in an uncontrolled environment it takes on different shades as the copper tarnishes, from Red, to Red Brown,, and then finally to brown. these are the basic color grades of cents.

as for the value of your coin , this will depend on several factors, the TPG that slabbed your coin, the actual grade of the coin and the market or demand for the coin.

were more than happy to help with answers to your questions, but first just relax time is not a factor.

Post pics of your coin and lets see what you have !!!

What a great question. I thought "Red" was a copper coin that toned that particular shade of brown that was redish. LOL. Not a dumb question at all, but one that I have learned from.
Thanks Stowell5005, for asking it.

I agree! There is NO such thing as a dumb question! With this forum, the internet, the library and other resources that I'm sure will be recommended to you, there is vast knowledge to be gained in the study and collecting of coins aka: Numismatics

I know that a lot of folks here like coppercoins.com. It's a good place to start with lots of answers. Just "Google" for coins, cents and so forth - you'll find a wealth of information. Try to take it one step at a time and you will not be too overwhelmed.

To the left of this screen is a "Navigation" area. The glossary will be quite helpful to you as well as the other "links".

Welcome to the forum!

Thank you for all of the great replies. I took a picture of the coins. I am going to try to put it in this posting.
Most of the coins say nu-mint.com on them, a couple say NMC and one says PCGS.
In case you cannot read what they say....this is what I have:

-1955-s Lincoln Cent (certified ms68 Red)
-1962 Lincoln Cent(PROOF 70 Cameo) (What does "proof" and "cameo" mean?
-1983-s Lincoln 1c (PR70 DCameo)
-1987-s Lincoln 1c (PR70 DCameo)
-1971-s Lincoln 1c (Proof 66)
-1983 Jefferson 5c (PR70Deep Cameo) (what does deep cameo mean?)
-1943 Mercury dime (Certified Uncirculated)
-2001-s 10c PCGS PR69DCAM 95292.69/09077708 (I have no idea what any of this mean, help?)
-1977-s 10c NMC PR70-DCam 0010375124
-1982s Washington 25c Proof 70 DCameo
-2006-s Nebraska 25c PR70 DeepCameo
-2006-s Nevada 25c PR70 DeepCameo
-1978-s Kennedy 50c PR70 DeepCameo
-1921 Morgan $1 Certified MS66
-1978-s $1 NMC PR70DCam 0010375123
-1979-p SBA $1 Certified MS68
-1989 Half Dollar Proof (in box with Certificate of Authenticity)
-347 AD Constans

Any information you can give me about what any of this means would be wonderful! Thanks.

your 2001 10 c is the only one I would trust the grade on
The number after the/ is the serial number of the slab and it can be checked against the PCGS data base to confirm the coin is one of theirs.
I have no faith in nu-mint/NMC
First rule of coin buying read the book then buy the coin.
Second rule buy the coin not the holder.
There are a lot of dubious third party grading companies out there who will overgrade in an attempt to lure money out of newbies. I hope your father did not pay too much for these coins.

thats exactly what I was afraid of when I asked who the coins were certified by in my first post. Many new collectors have fallen for this one man grading stuff and have found out later that their prized MS-70 and MS-69 coin they have is only a MS-61 coin and worth way less than what they thought when they bought it. The best bet is to buy from the Top 3 Grading Companies which are PCGS, NGC, ANACS. You are safe with any of those three companies, the rest are so far below those three there not worth mentioning. The morgan you have, a 1921 in MS-66 by either of the top 3 would be worth about 800 bucks and in a NNC or any other generic slab it is probably worth around 80 bucks. Also who certified (by lack of a better word) all the coins that just has "Certified" beside them was it also NNC or SGS or NTC or any of them other generic companies or was it by one of the top three that I mentioned above?
