The majority of 1883-O varieties have to do with mint mark or date doubling. This gouge is likely an unrecorded feature of an existing VAM, or a feature considered to small to mention in the title (I didn't read the description of every single 1883-O VAM before posting). So, what we do here is use the known identifying pickups to determine which variety it is, and then consider whether it's a previously-unknown feature. That could lead to a minor revision of the description of the known VAM, or maybe even a new sub-variety.
Either way, the study needs to start with mint mark and date.
