I am thinking of buying this coin so I did a little looking on ebay to see whats out there and prices. What I found was a suprising number of counterfeits. I saw 3 0r 4 1944 d cents that were altered. I was shocked.

There are tons of them out there. The good thing is that the ones made from a 44-D are easy to spot. Big gap between the 9 and the fake 1, plus the VDB on the shoulder.

This is one of those coins that I'd only buy either in a reputible TPG slab (PCGS, ANACS or NGC) or from a very trusted source.

Indeed....only buy this coin in hand! It's a fairly expensive key date coin, you want to hold it and see it before you buy. Also, if you're not an expert, stick to buying a slabbed coin.
