I need help identifying this coin. I think it's a Chinese Fen, but I'm not sure how many or what year it's from. Help? Identified - Moved to World Coins forum - Sap

The year is 25 (1936), and it seems a 20 cents (20 fen) to me. Krause Y#350

Thanks! :) I'd also like to know who the man on the front is, if that isn't too much trouble.

I'd say it's a Taiwanese coin.

It is Taiwanese (Republic of China, or Nationalist China), and Chang Kai-Shek's bust is on the obverse.

While "Taiwan" and the "Republic of China" are theoretically one and the same country, the distinction between pre-1949 and post-1949 is usually made. They're given separate listings in the catalogues. This coin is dated to 1936, while the Republic of China still controlled much of the mainland, but not Taiwan (which was owned by the Japanese at the time). Quote: I'd also like to know who the man on the front is, if that isn't too much trouble. That's Sun Yat-sen, revolutionary founder of the Republic. He's featured on many coins and notes of both phases of the Republic of China. The strange Y-shaped thing on the other side is a simplified depiction of an ancient Chinese "spade coin" from over 2000 years ago.

Now that I see pls's post I have my doubts; the first website I found was adamant the portrait on this coin is SYS, and I went with that, but others say CKS. I'll admit SYS is usually depicted with more hair. Unfortunately, the catalogue itself doesn't say.

I believe the man pictured on this coin is SYS. If you look at the page of republic of Taiwan (after 1949) you'll see both gentlemen. SYS has a "plateau" on top of his head while CKS's head is round.

What is that "H"-shaped form to the right (low pic)? You got the "fen" at the left, and "H" to the right? or is it two +'s (+ = 10) that's puted together?

The "H-shaped" character is a seldom-used character, called nian which means "twenty" and yes, nian is formed by joining two shi (10) together. See here.

My ID was based on memory, not research, so I will defer to definitive research on the subject, lol. As far as my memory goes, I can remember the furniture in our living room 60 years ago but not what I had for lunch yesterday ...
