I was going through a few of these today and noticed that there are two different date varieties for 1976; one with regular numbers and one with numbers that are larger and taller.

Anyone else aware of this? Which one is the "rare" one (if indeed there is such a thing)?

Yep, 1976 "large date" and "small date" varieties are well recorded, and given separate listings in Krause.

Someone gave me a handful of Mexican coins way back when I was a YN; these included two 1976 5 pesos. I recall being delighted when I looked them up in my Krause and found I'd actually been given one of each variety.

According to Krause, the "small date" has a mintage of 21 million, and the "large date" has a mintage of 121 million. The "small" is about double the value of the "large" one in equivalent condition, though neither are particularly scarce.

Thanks, Sap (as usual!)
