Hi all, I have recently acquire a 1919-B Ceylon 50C coin graded by ANACS as EF45. I find the grade so difficult to comprehend. I think that the reverse is of EF 45 standard but the obverse (surely the most significant side of the coin) is a middling VF at best. How can it possibly warrant an EF 45 grade? It isn't even close in my view. This experience has really knocked my confidence in ANACS grading standards for world coins. As you can see from the photos the wear on the jewels in the King's crown, face, and robe is too sever to credibly warrant an EF 45 grading. I would greatly appreciate hearing from other members over this. Am I being too stringent? If this is EF 45 I am thinking I have many Commonwealth coins that should be significantly upgraded!

Hi there Halfwitty, it is in a fairly new yellow labelled clearview slab. It is unmarked and looks relatively recent. Its serial no is 4694102. It came to me as part of a teletrade auction. Thanks.

Yes. The yellow is the newest and that surprises me as they have become even more stringent on their grading for U.S. coins anyway.Possibly you are more particular than the grading company. The coin above looks like a very good strike on both sides to me but as I said, I don't know much about foreign coins.

I have to agree. I am not familiar with this coin series. Are you collecting a set or have a mint state example to compare the devices on the coin. The devices on a coin series may vary. For example if you take a look at the devices on Franklin half compared to the Kennedy half the devices are more discreet on the hair etc and much more vague on the Franklin half. The same would be for A Peace dollar, much more vague than a Morgan

I think they over graded it. I might stretch for an XF-40 but I would feel more comfortable with VF-35.

Hi there, thanks very much for the feedback. I don't think there is too much in the way of price difference. It is just that I would have thought that an EF 45 should be kept for better extremely fine coins and not diluted via over-grading. If there is not a decent specimen to judge by then I feel they are not accurately basing grades on the wear front. thanks again, CP.

The mint state coin is a beauty. I can see your point. If I remember correctly vf in general should maintain detail with a flattened appearance, where xf should maintain detail with flattening of high points only. WIth that being said, probably No higher than xf-40, I am trying to compare the bust of king george with my bust halves. All in all overgraded
