If some one has a copy of the ebay coin grading standards book could they lend it to me.
As some of you may know I collect 2 Cent coins mainly by variety. Today just for something to do I looked at the 2 Cent coin listings that were due to finish in the next 24hrs. Without exception all the raw coins listed that were assigned a grade were overgraded even when you take into account the new more LAX ANA grading standards. I sent questions to the five I considered the worst to ask how they determined the grade. As yet I have had no replies. I guess these power sellers are just to busy to answer.

Looks like as usual I did not wait long enough. I have had one reply. The dealer took the time to explain where his grade came from and backed it up with excerpts from the PCGS guide. Where as we may disagree on the grade and interpretation of the Grading guide. I have to acknowlage the fact that he belives his grade to be true and accurate.

You think it's bad in specialist areas like Twos, you should try the "grading" happening in Morgan dollars.

Everybody and their brother posts stuff with the hair worn off, claiming it's Gem BU. ebay is no place for someone who can't grade from a pic, and understands the processes by which pictures get altered.

I believe you ran into a good seller - at least he didn't suggest where you could put your opinion.

In my experience 90 % of the european vendors overgrade their coins
even in the unnumbered european systems
If everyone overgrades how can a new seller possible learn how to grade if all the examples that he sees are wrong ?

For the moment I am bidding on a sovereign shieldback Vicki
I asked my friend the photograder what he thought
He kindly told me there were so many Vicki molds that had been used
he could not grade it without the coin in hand an a book next to it
I thought it was between AU and XF and he did not even want to comment on that

Sells only 24 hours and buy it now below melt
Got 10 feedbacks from China on the same day and all from zero feedback buyers
I rest my case

The simplist solution is to only bid the dollars based on the grade that you see the coin, of course this requires a little effort on the part of the buyers to learn something but it takes the sellers opinion out of the mix !!

Exactly,
I really don't pay much attention to what the seller grades there coins at,only to pull my interest to that coin. I look at the coin and judge for myself. Its good practice also. I also invite buyers of my coins to do the same. Everyone grades differently and I want buyers to be happy with anything they buy from me. I does the seller nor the buyer any good if the purchase has to be returned because the buyer felt the coin was not the coin or grade he expected.

It is a very laudable idea to try and grade a coin
I just spend several hours on grading this coin
Then my friend spend some hours on grading the coin
We started with anywhere from MS62 to MS64
and finally agreed on MS62 wich makes like a 1000 dollars
difference with MS63
Of course the newby which lives in driving distance so I could pick up the coin says it is a pretty coin
