I have two 1879 S Morgans...I happen to be comparing the reverses on the two and noticed that one of them had a longer center arrow shaft than the other..

Any help would be appreciated..

And an opinion on what the grade would be..is it worth having it slabbed or not.

Not the best looking...

Also on this one the "r" in trust is broken (upper serif is completely missing)...I'm guessing this is a vam-6
?

So the better looking one in the first post is normal? What grade would you give it?

The Reverse of '79 is, I believe, a just-barely circulated coin. That year is known for excellent strikes, which leads me to believe the minor wear above the ear and forehead is, in fact, circulation wear. Call it AU55-58.

The Reverse of '78 is worth a sizable premium over the other reverse, but wouldn't grade much more than EF40-45. Still a keeper.

Neither are financially worth slabbing, but not all good reasons to slab are about money.

tough one on the grading thing, but I would say maybe ms-62/63 and yes the other one is normal if you look at the 1879-S I just sold in the buy/sell/trade section you will see it has the same kind of reverse. I am not very good at grading from pictures but that looks to have quite a few bag marks which the camera could be making look better or worse then they actually are

Edited to add SuperDave chimed in while I was typing and he is much better at grading that I am so his grade will probably be alot closer than mine

I'm flattered, but probably without good reason. You know how photographs are - in hand, that coin could be a solid MS63. I just expect to see better hair detail in an MS 1879-S.
