Just wondering if anyone here as attempted to search for SLQ's in the wild by buying boxes or rolls of quarters. and if any one would have statistics, helpful tips on how and where will the best places to look for them. I am thinking about buying a box of quarters, but feel like I will just end up dry

I found one (1929) literally in the wild when I was metal detecting at the beach a couple months ago! I think the odds of finding one in a box of quarters is pretty slim. The only way they would appear in circulation is if some clueless person took their grandpa's old jar of coins to a coinstar and dumped them in. That doesn't happen all that often. I think it is rare enough that you are just going to run into frustration if you actually hunt for one. If you roll search quarters just hope for silver Washingtons and maybe one day you will get a nice surprise!

Another vote for REALLY slim chance. Its tough enough to find a silver Washington - with SLQ's being a relatively short run series, someone would almost have to put one back on purpose.

Hmm - now there's an experiment. Drop off a worn, dateless SLQ in my dump. See who gets it! LOL - probably less than 1/10th of 1% that anyone here would find it.

I've never found an SLQ from roll hunting quarters and even silver Washingtons are hard to come by. Best bet would be to find a mixed junk silver quarter lot to go through and plug some common date holes cheaply. You might get lucky and land a 27D low grade key, as low grade 27D are sometimes treated as commons by some dealers, especially since the amrket is soft on this date right now.

I would say a lot depends on where you're getting the box/bag from. Your chances might be higher if you buy the box/bag from a garage sale or small estate auction.

thanks guys. I think I will stick with buying from the coin shop.

my dad called me yesterday and said he had 4 or 5 SLQ's!.. he shipped them out yesterday! he is getting old and he said he couldn't read the dates. I'm hoping my 30yrs younger eyes can do a little better. I will post pics when I get them!
