I've read various threads on here regarding different books on errors/varieties and have seen several suggestions. I have a short list of a few books written down, but I don't just want a checklist of errors and varieties. I want to learn! I want to teach!

If you could recommend/vote (if this were a poll) just ONE book that would not only list errors/varieties (US Classic/Modern) AND teach the minting process and how/why errors occur to keep me (uh, someone) from posting tons of pics and asking stupid questions - which one would it be?

I'm sure my education will take waaaaay more than one book, just wondering what you would recommend reading FIRST.

OK! What an overwhelming response!

I have decided to try The Error Coin Encyclopedia IV by Margolis/Weinberg.

I hope it explains the minting process and is not just a checklist, but who cares now, right?

My personal recommendation would be from my own library- Official Price Guide to Mint Errors by Alan Herbert. Don't let the title fool you, pricing is not the primary function of this book. Alan Herbert delves into the PDS system to help explain and classify errors and die varieties. PDS is short for Planchet, Die, and Strike- the three areas where errors and varieties occur(not to be confused with Philly, Denver, and San Fran)

Thanks bio, I have read a lot of your posts and replies and value your opinion. I now have that one on the way, too!

Official Price Guide to Mint Errors by Alan Herbert. my first 'coin' book and it is a great educational piece of work.just a side note I happened to meet Alan at a coin show in Tempe,AZ.He was very ,very kind to me,he looked at some LMC's I had questions about, taught me about what they were and were not.said he had some books for sale 'sixth edition' I told him I didn't have the cash, but he signed 'one of his' books and gave it to me anyway, along with his AZ. address ,so that I could just mail him the 'monies'.which I did very gratefully.simply awesome all around.

That's a great story errorfinder, can't wait to read it. I want to learn so that I can get past posting common garbage and get on with the cool pics and finds.
