I found this coin online, and I just can't tell. Any input would be greatly appreciated :) I haven't bought it yet.

99.9% likelihood it's a "D". 1909 Half Eagles with "O" mintmarks are rare and pricey.

What are they calling it? Is it a D price or an O price? If they are calling it an O I'd insist on a closeup of the mark. Anyway, it looks like a D to me too.

Consider: It's a $400 or so coin if Denver, and a $7000+ coin if New Orleans, assuming original surfaces. I strongly suggest that you run away and hide if the seller is asking more than $350, and only then if they're trustworthy.

I love the Indian Head coins, For 1909 D coins, the broken "U" in United is indicative of a fake, not saying this is, but without a closer look it is hard to tell. Other things to look for on the reverse are depressions in the center of and above the arrow points, also a depression through the "S" in Pluribus.

It may just be the lighting but take a look at the book "United States Gold Counterfeit Detection Guide" by Bill Fivaz

A must have for buying gold coins.

The "O" must be so pricey, RedBook doesn't list one. 1909, 1909-S and 1909-D only.

Thanks everyone for your kind replies! Trainhater, you seem to know alot about the Indian series. Do you know of any diagnostics that can be used authenticate 1909-O coins? Thanks!

I definitely see a "D". 1909-O is worth some pretty big money. It's the second key date to the series behind 1929. I'd be scared to buy a raw one.
Rest in Peace

Certainly looks like a D without even magnifying it.
