Lauderdale couple sells old currency for $4.2 million in new cash

Associated Press

DALLAS -- Two 19th-century pieces of U.S. currency, including a $100 note issued during the Civil War, have sold for $2.1 million each.

An anonymous buyer, described only as being from the East Coast, purchased the two bills last week for $4.2 million from the collection of Edward and Joanne Dauer of Fort Lauderdale.

The sale fetched a record amount for paper money, according to Heritage Auction Galleries in Dallas, which brokered the deal.

The $100 note is a 1863-series gold certificate signed Dec. 13, 1866. The note was part of a series of currency the Union issued to help finance the Civil War, Heritage spokesman Jim Fitzgerald said. The other bill was an 1891 treasury note for $1,000.

Golly, that was a lot of money in those days. A thousand dollar note is still alot of money these days but back then it was a fortune.
Rest in Peace

I only have a few banknotes, including a couple old U.S. (1917).

I also will soon have one of the Australian "plastic" notes.

Banknotes are fascinating, but one can only collect so many things.

I agree someone was a millionaire back then to even have those bills back then. But it would be nice to find something like that in a old footlocker that was in a storage building that your grandfather had stashed away and forgot about, because sure as heck wouldn't be able to buy one of them now to add to the collection. And as far as someone cant collect everything, that is true but hey you already say you have a couple of banknotes, that is all you would need in the collection if they were worth this much
