If you are looking at gold coins and want the most "bang for your buck"; consider raw, circulated, classic U.S. (pre-1933) fractional pieces of $2.50, $5.00 and $10 denominations. These are often available for very modest premiums over their melt value and are almost universally accepted in the markets.
Watch for deals on Liberty Head pieces in particular. They are much less counterfeited than Indian Head pieces and millions are available raw in EF/AU condition. You should be able to buy several pieces with the $2K if gold stays below $1,100/oz this month.
