i think this coin may be gold, but need help, I'm hoping it is a NERVA. 96-98 AD. Æ Sestertius (33mm, 27.89 gm).
Struck 96 AD. Laureate head right / Fortuna
standing left. RIC II 60; Cohen 60.

I don't think that the "crusties" stick to gold as I'm seeing here. If I'm wrong, let me know.

No, it's not gold, and no, it doesn't need further cleaning.

This coin is made of orichalcum, an ancient form of brass. The "sestertius" is a brass denomination.

And sorry, but it's not from Nerva, either. I can read enough of the obverse legend to make out "...ANVS AVGV..." on either side of his head, and "COS III" in the exergue - this is a sestertius of Hadrian. The figure on the reverse is Hilaritas with two children. RIC 970, Cohen 817. Example on Wildwinds.

I like lafaa123 when he gets right to the point. Right - DON'T clean it. You can see all the details that you (or Sap) need to attribute it.

Just got home and looked this one up in my Sear catalogue. It's listed as number 3602, CV £100 in Fine (which might be a slightly high grade for this coin). It doesn't bear a date, but archaeologists have dated it to 128 AD.
