It looks like some kind of doubling. I's all along the top lettering. Forgive the pictures they were snapped in a hurry

Your pics are fine. They capture the detail you want to present. I want to say Machine Doubling but I am not sure about this one. Lets see what the others have to say.

I believe it's just the die breaking the copper plating that surrounds the device's thus exposing the zinc.I think

I'd disagree, looks to me like a split in the copper plating, exposing the zinc.

Of course...I could be wrong. :)

Jasper and Dad are correct. The plating follows away from the die in what is called cold flow. In this case the plating was too thin and split allowing the zinc to show.
