I would think with all the higher metal prices currently, they might change the composition of the nickel as they have with pennies in 82. When due you think this will occur and does the mint have to tell when they will be changing the composition of out coins or can they due as they please. Currently a nickel is worth $0.0595636 as of today

The mint does not have the authority to change the metal composition. In 2008 a bill passed the house, but not the senate, that would have caused a change.

I am not making a prediction, but I would not be surprised if they cease production of the cent and nickel in the next five years.

Its costing them a fortune to produce nickels and cents, I think jbuck has hit the nail on the head.

Are they really worth that much? Couldn't a central financial authority adjust the power of the US dollar because of the strength of local coinage? I'm talking out the wazoo, but it seems plausible in my mind. BTW, is Canadian pure (100%) nickel worth collecting? They have no steel like modern coinage.

Libertab I would say yes to that, I'm not too similar with Canadian coinage but id its the same size as the us nickel deff. good to keep. If thats the case then due it, us is 25% nickel so the Canadian probably worth alot more

The pure nickel Canadian five cent pieces have been actively being withdrawn by the canadian government for years. It wasn't that long ago that Nickel hit $20 a pound of so and the US five cent was worth over 15 cents as metal, and the Canadian coins were worth over 25 cents each. And the Canadian five cent has been plated steel since something like 1990
