I was working on a house taking apart a wall, when I found a 1929-D Lincoln Cent in the mess, looks to be in nice shape, but it has some dirt or stuff on it, what can I use to take the crap off without hurting it? Recommendations? thanks

"Dirt" should just wash off in water. If water doesn't shift it, then it's most probably corrosion and anything done to remove it will probably result in a "cleaned-looking" coin.

Acetone might work too.

the next 2 are about one minute in acetone then about 10 minutes soaking in dish soap...and rinsing with water, a little change..

acetone will NOT work... try a lite application of vaseline on a Q-tip, and just roll it over the corrosion, rub it in a bit and get it covered.. Use the other end of the Q-tip to remove the vaseline. To retone it: mix a little bit of vaseline with a tiny bit of sulphur (medical grade), and apply. Done correctly, and no one will ever know...

what I do is, without using any water, sprinkle heavily with, Comet or other abrasive cleaner and use a steel wool pad to scrub it heavily. Be careful only to scrub the area you want to clean as you will ruin the coin otherwise! After you have scrub heavily, allow the coin to sit in Coca-Cola for 48 hours. Do not remove before 48 hour period has ended!

However, most important!! Please check today's date and realize that it is April 1 (April Fools' Day).

Do not clean the coin at all! You will only scrub the value off of the surface.

well I have been working on the idea.....

that I could use heat to break free
any contamination on the surfaces,

so I built this home made heating apparatus
now time will tell how well it works......

here is my new toy.......

Aladinslamp,
Are you sure that scene did not come from the latest terminator movie? Sincerely, John Leckrone
