I am posting the reverse of a 1972P Ike dollar which I believe is the rare "Rev 2" on a 1972P clad coin. The earth does have more vertical definition to it and the "three islands" are certainly not there. The Red Book state that the islands will be indistinct or missing. In this case I opt for the former. I have compared it to a 1972D Ike clad and on the D coin the three islands are very distinct and lie right of the Florida peninsula. Thoughts? I'm new to the forum and coin collecting and look forward to interacting on this forum very much!

Charlie

What RedBook says about the Var.2 Ike, is that the island will be either indistinct, or weak. I can see the islands below Florida on your picture. I compared it with a 1971-D Ike I have and the earth is identical between the two coins.

Understand. But the other 72 Ike I have from the Denver mint has the three islands in a very different spot. They are representing Cuba, Hispainola and Puerto Rico and all are stamped much to the right of the one I posted. I'm just throwing it out for discussion. Thanks for your input.... C.

Yes that would be the modified die variety. The pic you posted has the die variety like the 71, the islands are beneath and slightly to the left of the Florida peninsula, like the ones I have.

I circled the 3 islands in your pic.

Your image is that of the Variety 3 Ike, and was created after more resilient die steel became available. It was used for the remainder of production of the 1972 Eisenhower dollar at the Philadelphia Mint.
