Hi all, new forum member. Does anyone have any info on a limited number of proof 1992 Barcelona $1 coins that were to be a promotion for the Olympics that year. They were encapsulated. Something happened and they were never released to the public except for a few that were sold from the Mint store. Anyone have any knowledge on this.

Hi Dicky,

I don't know if this helps, but here is the information that I could find regarding the Barcelona one-dollar coins.

1) There were 16,996 coins that were released in a Royal Australian Mint wallet.
2) There were 23,500 coins that were released in an Olympic carded holder.
3) There were 2,979 aluminium-bronze proof coins released in a cylindrical plastic case.
4) There were 12,500 sterling silver proof coins released with interrupted reeding and in a square box.
5) There were 2,500 sterling silver proof coins released with continuous reeding and in a long box.

I think that the coin you are interested in is number 3. According to Greg McDonald:
"A small number of proofs were struck in aluminium-bronze as a special promotion to highlight Women in Sport.
Encapsulated in a cylindrical plastic case, the promotion was abandoned before the Games and the coins
already minted were sold in the Mint's tourist shop. This issue was very short lived and the coin and capsule is
now quite scarce". They retail for about $210.

I hope that this information is useful.

Regards,

Snooba.

I just happened to be at the Mint in Canberra in 1992, on the third of January, The previous day they had just put into operation a coin press that could be operated indirectly by a coin slot machine. I put in my $2 coin and I received a brand new aluminium bronze $1 Barcelona coin: that was about 10 o'cloch in the morning, so it must of been one of the very first coins off that pair of dies.

Later in the year I attended the Sydney Coin Show, and purchased two silver proof Barcelonas from the Mint with the continuous milling in the long box, for $30 each. I still have one, the other I gave away a a Christmas present.
