The headline in today's edition of Coin World: "Proof 2010 American Silver Eagle Silver In Doubt" Moy says bullion coin demand stronger than in 2009. Read into it what you will. Check out the latest edition for more details.

Missing "one" year is one thing.....but missing "TWO" years, or possibly even more than that, seems just wrong ! I think they should just cancel the series if they're going to do this. Make the law say to "end it". The "law" doesn't "require" them to make Proofs......that's just stupid ! ....... THEN MAKE THE LAW REQUIRE THEM TO MINT PROOFS ! DUH ! DORKUS FOOL HEADED IDIOT CONGRESSMEN ! .... No more Bullion Eagles, no more Burnished Uncirculated, no more Proofs..... Be done with the WHOLE PROGRAM THEN ! What am I saying ! ......I love this coin !......But, if that is true about not having another year.....I'm just STEAMED ! ...

While I wasn't born yet, this scenario kinda reminds me of when the SMS coins in the '60's were released rather than proof coinage. Though it is for completely different reasons, I bet collectors then felt that the mint was committing blasphemy just as some do today.

I am sure the SMS coins and the removal of the mint-marks made more than a few people upset.
It would probably not be so bad if album pages were not pre-dated so far in advance, causing people to leave holes in their albums.

That is really ridiculous Considering that the mintage last year was ~30 million, just 2% of that would have satisfied collector demand for proofs and it would have had a negligible effect on bullion sales.

Like I have said before, now would be a good time to introduce a new design. Especially now that the 2010 proof may not come to fruition for the second consecutive year.

Yeah, and I'm sure I'm not alone also, in that I've never even bought a "Bullion" Eagle until last year.....never wanted one.....never had any interest in one.....never wanted a "Green Monster Box" .....or any square tubes of them from those .....never wanted a "Slabbed one"...never wanted a "raw" one in a 2x2..... all I wanted were the Proofs and an occasional Burnished Uncirculated.Last year this option was removed from me.....so I broke down and bought my first slabbed Bullion one at MS69....that way..at least I'd have SOMETHING in the " ASE arena" from 2009 ! (I won't do it again !) If they're going to do it again.......then I say....let the public order the Bullion ASE's directly from the Mint and don't make us get them from dealers, over priced coin catalogs, and the "devil in their hip pocket"--informercials !Don't offer the "cushy money makin' deal to a handful of dealers" and then "secondarily" make them available to us.Ha Ha.....yeah.....like this idea would ever happen either !... ....I'm just going to go stand over in the corner and pout for a little while.....I'll be over there for a couple hours if anyone needs me....

How is the mint gonna have enough silver for the regular silver eagles when they will be producing those 5 ounce coins which would most likely exceed the amount used for the proof eagles.

Yeah.....another good question ! No wonder the 2010 Proof ASE is in doubt ! They need their silver procurements for THOSE 5 0z. Franklin Mint-like MONSTROSITIES ! Does anybody else feel all warm and fuzzy inside like I do, when thinking about our politicians in this country ?

Interesting point. They take the silver from something that they know will sell and use it for something that may or may not sell. That is a brilliant business strategy!

that's a total bummer. I was really looking forward in this years release, since last year was a bust. oh well... to next year.

Just taking this slightly in another direction, why can't the mint sell silver eagles directly to the public like they do with their other mint products? Why should we have to pay a premiumon the secondary market? I think we should be able to buy direct from the mint.

I think legally the bullion coins are sold as investment coins, they have different legal implications (like the ability to claim them in an IRA).
The burnished and proof coins are strictly numismatic items for collectors.
Since this difference is legal, I think the same legislation is responsible for the distribution method.
