Found this in a bag of 50 cent pieces. (posted also in the JFK finds post ) Thought I would seek the opinions of this board. Quite the different example . Thanks for looking. Edited by spjegues 04/05/2010 5:25 pm

WOW! Wouldn't have minded finding that! Definitely a genuine Mint Error, just not sure of what happened there. Pretty sure a brockage was involved (struck planchet sticking to the obverse (hammer) die and striking the coin) but there is way more than that going on here. Waiting for the experts, especially Mike Diamond. Will be watching this thread!

Geepers ..... that is one crazy coin indeed. I agree with CND ..... I can't imagine how somebody could have faked this much 'stuff' in their garage. Stay tuned ..... the true 'experts' will be along shortly and share with all of us the 'how did it happen' theories. David

However, the motto and the portrait are reversed. That's kind of strange.
I'm not saying it's not an error, just an observation. Seems like they would still be in the right direction when struck even if it was upside down.

What kind of bag did you find it in? Where did the bag come from? The mint doesn't ship in $50 bags anymore so it didn't come out of a mint bag. Just curious.

It was in a $1000 bag of 50 cent pieces that I picked up at my bank. That bag also had a razor blade in it scary stuff.

I am no expert, but I am very skeptical od this coin. All the striking on the obverse is both reversed, and at the same time correctly oriented. The reverse is nearly illlegible. The fold-overs don't seen to be right, either, however, I can't put my finger on it. Yes, it will be very interesting to hear what Mike Diamond has to say.

SPJEGUES, I see you did say a bag of 50 cent pieces in the first thread. I missed that. It looks to me like this coin started out as a normally struck 2007 D cent that was sandwiched with another cent outside of the mint. Then the sandwiched coin was pressed into this coin 2 more times giving the mushy look of the 2 impressions on the bottom of the coin. Just my opinion.

This is not a minting error. This cent was simply crushed, with at least one other coin and perhaps several unstruck planchets in the mix. Such damage can occur inside or outside the Mint. But it's all post-strike damage and hence the coin is worthless.

So, the razor blade is worth more?

Thanks Mike; this one totally fooled me! The great thing about this hobby is that there is always something new to learn, and I have been schooled today. That's a good thing!

Indeed CND .... same for me! I said ... Quote: I can't imagine how somebody could have faked this much 'stuff' in their garage. Mike said .... Quote: This is not a minting error. Goes to show (again) how much I have to learn about this hobby ..... and the true value of the CCF in that the real experts will show up and keep all of us schoolchildren straight. I believe I will go back to nickel roll searching ..... something I know a little bit about. David
