I have a very odd penny, and I know very little about error coins. It is a 1998 penny, and it is a silverish color. I don't think it is silver, but I don't think it is coated either. I was told that if it was zinc coated it would turn a goldish color when held up to a flame. It doesn't do this. It also has no copper color around the edges where there would be wear, or on a small nick that is around the edge. I will post pictures of each side and the edge tomorrow. I would like to know what I have, and if it is worth anything. Thanks!

First,

Sounds like your coin has just been plated, or possibly a science project such as this:

so, I wouldn't get my hopes up on it having any value.

But, please do post a pic of the obverse and reverse, you never know!

There is a variety associated with 1998 that collectors look for called a " Wide AM". If you do have one, it will most likely not have the same value as an untampered with WAM, but may still be collectable.

It is most likely plated, but even if it was worth something, now that you have held the coin in an open flame, the chances are even if it was it isn't now.

It's worth what it says on the back if it has been tampered with. Many experimental coins are just spent.
