Looking through my father's coins, I find one whose label I can't understand. It says "1942 S double date." The Red Book doesn't show any such coin. There's a 42 D 2 over 1, but this is 42 S, not 42 D. And I can't see anything unusual about the date on the coin anyway.

However, because my father was so extremely methodical about his coins, all neatly labeled (with no other mistakes I can detect so far), I hesitate to discount it as an error. At least not without first checking with more knowledgeable collectors.

I've scanned the obverse really large here so that you can get a good look at the date. What do you think?

Hi. Coneca doesn't list any doubled dies either. Just a few rpm's.
I know they used a small s (10%) and a large S (90%) that year.
Heres a link to Coneca. Joe

Hi Diane

I dont see anythng in the pic, nor do I know of any doubled dies for this date .

The S is a standard size mint mark.

Thanks to both who replied. I guess the old man wasn't infallible.

By the way, Rick, what does " Touch not the cat bot a glove!!" mean?

Hi Diane and welcome!

I enlarged the date portion of the coin and it looks like there may be a couple of small die chips in it. This may have appeared as doubling to your father. Here is the enlarged photo. What do you all think?
