I was going thru some coins this morning I purchased a couple years back and noticed this poor animal. It appears to have taken a not so mild acid bath followed by a bit of solder work. Shame what people do to deceive.

Could have been looking for a 8 being staped over a 7! But actually there isn't any way an acid bath will do the damage shown on this coin. It's a lot more like corrosion......bad!

I will have to agree with Old Dan on this one. I (we) know exactly what they were looking for or should I say hoping for!

OK, it sounds like you all think the damage to this coin was deliberate. I would be interested to know what someone was trying to accomplish here, or what they were hoping for. Were they trying to make the coin something it was not, or were they trying to reveal what it really was. It's not obvious to me (beginner that I am).

Since the date is the first point of wear on these coins, often people will use Nic-a-date or some other acid based solution to bring up the date again. Basically, this solution will eat away some of the metal with the denser areas being made visible.

Even an acid-dated 8/7 coin has numismatic value. The problem arises if whoever is selling an acid-dated coin does not represent the coin as such. For this reason, Buffalo nickels do not sell very well on ebay since many of those coins have been acid-dated. An acid-dated coin is easy to spot since the metal becomes very flat with no shine at all and the color is changed.

Not only that but there is no sharpness whatsoever to the coin which I think would also be consistent with the wash. The unnatural color is uniform both in the fields and in protected areas.
Another reason I would consider it deception is the metal solder used as filler in the center rev. This metal has also been reshaped for better appearence. The color may have matched on a untampered with nickel but stands out here.
I was not deceived by this. This coin was part of a large group of coins I purchased from a knowledgeable enthusiast (in case he recognizes it )who has posted here. The group was a bargain and I have been immensely happy with previous dealings as well. I only mention deception because somewhere down the line that must have been the intent.
