I have about $10 face of circulated 1940s & 1950s nickels (No wartime silver) that I have plucked from circulation over the years. But it is starting to occur to me that in such grades (mainly VG-VF) they are just not worth that much. So would it be in my best interest to hoard the bulk and hope that one day they are worth something (and that I could actually be able to sell them) or should I cash them in at the bank and get a nice $10 coin? Thanks!

If you're going to rid yourself of them, can I have the S-mint ones? (Along with some other dates.) :)

florida- well, I haven't quite decided yet what to do with them. Honestly, I am not quite sure if there are many S-mint coins in there. And I know for a fact that there are no 1950-D's in the lot.

No problem. I don't expect to find anything rare, I just like the S-mints because they're nostalgic. (Then, of course, you have the OMM possibilities.)

If you do decide to get rid of them, feel free to contact me.

I have a few bucks worth also, and will probably auction them off.

afcop13- But are people actually paying more than face for, say, circulated 1946-D's and 1958's?
Rest in Peace

I have bought pre 58 nickels locally in the past for 7 cents each. The problem is you have to buy locally because it is not worth it if you add postage to get them.

I avidly roll search Nickels, and I save all of the pre-1960 ones, no matter the condition.
I bet they would go for "something" at an auction market.....how much...dunno......others can speak better to that.
I've certainly had the same "ponderings" as you though......is it really worth it.
I just have the theory that .....it isn't hurting me to keep them, and perhaps my inheritors will appreciate some of the hoarding I've done 70 years from now, when NONE of these can be found in circulation anymore.
So, if I ever "needed the money"......then yeah.....I could certainly sprint on down to the bank and cash them in for "face"......but I don't want to and haven't needed to, as of yet ! .....

Often, and this is very debatable, I look to "the future" with my coin collecting, not only "my own" of course, but especially a future where I've been "passed away" for 80-100 years !) Or a time when my now 14 year old Nephew is 91 years old....(I'm 41)......or my future step-daughter is 86 years old....(she's 5 now)
And I think to myself....."Self, would these loved ones potentially appreciate some of this stuff that I've saved, that was no big deal at the time ?" (I bet EVERY generation thinks that about something ! --- cars, coins, tools, baseball/football cards, antiques of all kinds back then, with even more age nowadays) How many Cents, or V nickels or whatever, were "no big deal" back then, that we WISH a family member had saved "just for the heck of it !"

(For example too, I've got a circulated coin tube P&D of each of the Westward Series designs too....just because I "want to".......not because they "worth something".) There are just A LOT of factors that have me collecting "other than" just "what's it really worth right now ?"

So I'd say.......if you need the $10.00 THAT bad.....then go for it.....if not.....save them and forget about them until you're 94 years old ! ......

pyrbob- In the past I have seen some dealers at shows selling bulk lots of them, but many local dealers really don't have any customer base for them since most people want BU's (especially since most dates are quite cheap in that grade). So I have been to quite a few local shops where well-circulated pre-1960 Jeffersons and very low grade buffaloes are given out as change. In fact, that is pretty much how I have acquired these rolls.
