We found this amongst my Grandmother's belongings. Not looking to sell it, just curious on the story behind this tiny little coin.

Front has Wilhelm II, back says Deutsche Reich 1910 2 Mark. I've come across info about the 10/20 Mark coins, but not a 2. Measures about 1cm in diameter.

Front of coin:

Info card it's attached to:

Thanks in advance. This is driving me nuts!

Well, it was issued in the German Empire, which lasted from 1871 to 1918. That reich united all the German and Prussian states into a major empire that was at the helm of Europe for a great time and basically replaced France (even to today!) as the major European power. That's just a bit of German history for ya.

However regarding the coin, goldmarks minted in Gold were only in 5m, 10m and 20m denominations. From the reverse picture, it looks like yours is a copy of what is a coin that never existed. I think the 8k also give it away. There are hundreds of miniature coins that imitate the designs of Mexican Maximillian tokens, Double Eagles, Krugerrands etc that are labeled 8k or 14k and contain a minute amount of gold.

So in my opinion, I think it's just a token, and not a real coin.

to the community.

WD1040 is correct, Germany did not issue any 2 Marks coins in gold only in silver.
