I have too many to photograph everything. The only reason I snap a pic is to post here on the forum.

For me it's the other way around. I use a camera - my scanner is sad.

I can only dream of getting pictures of all my coins. I am slowly wading through my primary collection but it takes me about an hour to do 10 coins and when I am at home there are other more pressing things that need doing..

I take pics of my coins and I also take pics of the coins at my coin clubs as I incorporate them into several newsletters. I don't have a fancy expensive camera, but what I using is the Fuji s1000fd. This camera has a great macro and super macro feature.

No - I don't photograph them and probably never will. I look at the task of doing this as way beyond the enjoyment and fun I have collecting. Been collecting off and on for 40+ years and I have no idea how long it would take to photograph everything. Most are in 2x2 or album and for any type of good photo would have to be removed - then place back in new 2x2 or album. I have "many" duplicates which would then require some catalog system to define which photo went with which coin. Just thinking - even if I was a beginner, don't think I would do it, just to much time involved from a personal standpoint. HOWEVER - I will say, I do appreciate those who do make photo's and post them. Thank You !

I've taken a few photos of coins but for a special purpose only. Other wise if I have the coin, I see no reason to take a photo of one. Naturally asking a question like this on a coin forum, you'll get lots of yes answers. Like asking a CAB driver if he ever drove a car. I've been taking photos for possibly 50 to 60 years and coins are just not at the top of my list. For me a coin will stay the way it is or almost for a long, long time. Relatives come and unfortunately go. Kids grow up and then it's to late to take a kid's photo of them. Usually even your house, car, friends, neighbors, etc also come and go so a photo of them is rather important to me over a coin. Not to long ago, on a project I was working on in the center of a large city I photographed almost the entire construction project with well over 10,000 photos. Such things are done, finished and no longer able to photo what happened. A coin is just there if you want to see it.
I guess my attitude is based on so many people have vanished over the years so a photo of them is so much more as you get older than a photo of a coin, car, boat, etc.

What would you show the insurance company for proof if someone stole your collection or you lost it in a fire or other disaster? I lost a partial collection a few years ago and the insurance company took me over the coals. Never did get paid for that collection, but I remember the last thing the adjuster said, "If you would have had some pictures we would have paid your claim". After that I took pictures of every darn thing I owned.

For insurance I don't take photos, I just rolled the collection in a close up through a high def digital movie cam. Can be stopped and reviewed at any time with good enough clarity to satisfy a claim.

What is the difference between a scanner and a digital microscope? How can you make sure you get the whole coin with a microscope, isn't the area that a microscope can see very small and limited?

Thanks for the info. Never thought to use a videocam for my coins might be a lot easier. Just got a new high-def one and the video is awesome. Will give it a try.
Time to answer Snitchard's questions guys. I am interested in finding out also, how you can see the whole coin in a microscope. Took my 1914 Lincoln to the Community College and they put it under the 100x scope but I could only see part of the date and not much of the whole coin. Enough to find out there was no mint mark but a gouge where someone messed around with it.

I've mentioned this previously. Telling an insurance company exactly what you own may not be the smartest thing to do these days. Remember that with todays systems at those places everything you mention goes into a computer system. Such systems are available to almost everyone in the organization. Not saying there could ever possibly be a dishonest person working there, but it is amazing how many robberies occur where people list to many valuables. Your losses may well have been due to way to much info on your possesions.
I realized this when I went to a local agency that handled my auto and nome insurances and sat down to discuss my policies. A lady I never knew, never saw, didn't know and later found out she was only working there a few months, opened my accounts on her computer. I could see everything I ever listed for home insurance right there on the screen. THINK! If she could do that, so could many, many, many others.
I've become a firm believer that the best insurance is to keep my mouth shut.

I did at one time scan my coins (when I had a fair number) then cropped and saved as individual items but after about 3 or 4 thousand they amounted to about 4 gigabytes. Then my scanner gave up on me. My new scanner then produced scans at a much reduced storage capacity so I gave up. I reckon if I had to re-scan all my coins at a reduced storage capacity I'd wear out the new scanner as well and then next generation scanner would be less storage...ad infinitum.
So now I only scan as and when I need (to post to a site like this).
I do however have scans of all my banknotes (only 2,000+ items) because ithey're much easier to view when I'm offered new notes rather than get them out physically.

I've owned 1 camera in my life. It was a polaroid back in the early 80's. With all the modern technology these days, it may be easier for me to fly a space shuttle than to learn all the different settings on a camera.

A lot of modern (even reasonably priced) digital cameras are not that difficult to operate. Believe me I had a lot more trouble with VHS recorders when they first came out (my 10 year old son, at the time, had no problem with them).
