I've never sold coins before, and now I have some rolls of cents that my friend wants to buy.

What is the least expensive way that I can get them to him?

I've done some research on the USPS website, and it seems that the least I can charge him for shipping is $1.39, not including packaging costs. Plus, since a roll of coins is more than 3/4", it has to be in a box and not an envelope. Is this correct?

I don't want to turn him off because the shipping is so darn expensive, and I do want to make a slight profit on these coins. Any suggestions?

Do not use the box for a single roll. Use a small padded envelope. Reinforce the edges with shipping tape. I wrap the roll with paper and sandwich it with maybe some bubble wrap before inserting in the main envelope to reduce internal movement.

I shipped 2 rolls a few months ago and I think it cost around $3 or so. That included the padded envelope I purchased from Staples or Wal-mart. Not as pretty as the the ones the USPS has, but it worked.

Just to clarify, according to USPS, you can use an envelope but if it exceeds the size limits in thickness, you have to ship using the parcel rates.

I think when I shipped a single roll, it was around $2.25. It varies a little by zip code from/to and of course weight.

If you know the weight and ship to zip, there is a calculator you can use on the USPS web site.

If the roll is not particularly valuable, I use a manilla envelope. Wrap the roll in bubble wrap and reinforce all 4 edges with packing tape. DON'T FORGET TO ADD DELIVERY CONFIRMATION! Use DC everytime you accept money for goods to protect yourself from scammers that claim "they never got the item".

As I recall the last single roll I shipped like this was around $2.75 with DC. I usually charge $3 to ship a roll because the envelope, tape and bubble wrap are not free....not to mention my time, gas and vehicle wear-n-tear to drive to the PO.
