Thoughts? I picked this up for what I thought was a good price, but I'm not real sure how the cleaning on the front would affect the grade.

It looks like an AU58 Details coin, but the obverse looks pretty harshly cleaned. The TPG's would not put it in a problem-free holder.

I defintely knew what I was getting into when I got it as far as the cleaning goes.. That's why I paid EF-40 money for it.. I'm just trying to figure out what the real value of a coin with such good detail, but has been harshly cleaned on one side is.

In general, how much does cleaning lower the grade/value? Let's say this would be a MS-58 without the cleaning... Let's say that value is around $175. How much would the cleaning actually lower the value?

Very nice, I would grade it at AU-55 cleaned. At least they left the reverse alone.

That all depends on demand and the coins remaining eye appeal. Generally no more than 1/2 the value non-cleaned coin. Of course there are exceptions ... someone needs a specific coin to complete a collection, they have more money than brains, etc. I've seen coins like this that were known to be cleaned (stated in the auction) but still sold for near grey sheet.

It's hard to determine what the value of a problem coin is. There are a lot of collectors who won't buy them. What someone is willing to pay for it really depends on the extent of the damage and the rarity of the coin. On one hand, it is hard to find Barber quarters in high grades that have not been cleaned at some point. On the other hand, the 1892 quarter is not really considered a rare date for the series at any grade level. I'm sorry I can't give you a better answer. If you are happy with the way the coin looks in your collection, I think paying EF40 money for the coin is a decent deal.

I've got a nearly complete Barber quarter collection and there are few cleaned & problem coins in it. I'm planning to upgrade some of them, but I'll probably keep 1 or 2 that I really like despite the problems.

Nice coin, and the reverse is really nice. Such a shame that someone, who probably thought they were helping the coin, cleaned the obverse so harshly.

Not a bad technical grade, mid to high AU. Harsh cleaning would kick the value down a bit. I would guess 1/4-1/3 of non cleaned price.

Thanks for all of the help everyone. Looks like I might have overpaid for it by $20-$30.. But I'm still happy with the coin. I'm building a F-VF Barber set and I dont have the money to buy AU across the board. So this was my way of having an AU detail coin in the collection. I have definitely learned that cleaning is much more detrimental to the coin that I orginally though.. so that's a good lesson learned! I still love the coin minus the cleaning though :)

It is tough to assign value to cleaned coins, so to the right person, you did not overpay at all, while another would say you overpay by a great amount.

If you are just starting a Barber quarter collection, I would recommend picking up David Lawrence's Complete Guide To Barber quarters. I think it was last printed in 1994 so some of the values listed are outdated but there is a lot of helpful information in the book. It is out of print but you can find it on ebay from time to time.

Good luck with the collection!

I would have to agree AU details that received a harsh cleaning.
As for the value it would depened on the buyer. Sorry thats the best I can answer.
