Well, if you know it's from the Ginza mint, that should be good enough.

This is an old coin struck in the pre-Meiji era of Japan. This is ichibun gin (one part silver), which constitued the old Japanese coinage system.

Here's more information. I myself need to refresh this information.

**Ah! About value! There were basically millions of these silver coins, mostly in very good condition since western coins came out shortly after these. I think a good price would be around $20.

Yup, this is a 1 mon from the Kanei era, from the early to mid 1600s. I can't be sure if it was made from the fragments of the daibutsu in Edo region, but daibutsu means a huge statue of Buddha.

By the way, here is a chart of the Tokugawa coinage system. Your first one is 1 shu gin, and the copper coin is 1 mon sen.

You're the man!! (or woman), thanks.

My mother was president of the Women's Friends Society and a Missionary for four years in Japan during the 40's...that is where our family picked up these coins. Emperor Hirohito, in gratitude to her and the Society of Friends, bestowed many gifts to my mother.

haha I'm a kid actually, not a man yet... I think...

That's quite an interesting story! I certainly wish that an emperor or king would give me coins...
