I am wondering if anyone knows who the soccer player on the Somali 25 Shillings coin is? I haven't found any information so I'm just curious if it's anyone famous or just a random dude :)

(I know that this might be the wrong forum but I couldn't find any "general question" forum)

Here's a pic!

I think the "World Coins" forum would fit the question.

I believe it is a random dude. This coin seems to be an "oddball". It is not tied up to any particular player or any particular event. It is not a part of any series (or, at least, that I know). Just showing that the soccer is popular in Somalia.

Interesting coin.

Some info here:
http://www.wbcc.fsnet.co.uk/af-soa.htm

I also read something that said the South African 2010 World Cup was confirmed in 2001 so lots of the African nations (Congo, Uganda etc) had football coins made to celebrate it. Not sure how accurate that is as I thought it was announced that SA were successful in about 2004. Maybe they launched the bid in 2001?

The only descriptions of the coin I can find say 'soccer player' so think it is just a random dude.

Found this while I was looking! It was taken in Mogadishu during a 'kick about'.

They must play slightly different rules to us in Europe. We were always made to remove our AK47s and extinguish burning cars before play could start.

DR of Congo issued a "random dude soccer player" coin in 2002.

I concur. Topic moved.

As for the coin, I also concur it seems to be a generic soccer dude. It also seems to have common elements with the Congo-Kinshasa coin in svslav's post; I suspect they were made by the same mint.

Both were minted in Kremnica, SK. Now 2002 was the year of the World Cup in Japan and Korea. I assume (but do not know for sure) that mints/countries which plan to issue World Cup coins need to have a FIFA license. So could a "generic" football coin be a way to avoid paying such fees?

COuld possibly have something to do with the African Cup of Nations also, but it does sound like a get out of paying fees thing!
