I also received this one today(good day for me).. I don't think it's been cleaned since there are no hairlines, but it does look to have been dipped at some point. All 4 digits are visible to some extent, and I bought it thinking only the last one was visible; so that was a nice surprise. Grade?

Nice F-12. I agree with your assessment that it's been dipped in the past.

Great semi-key! Or perhaps a key date....

Question......what would lead you to think its been dipped? This is something I haven't learned how to spot yet.....

I think its a pretty nice specimen, and would give it F15, knowing that these are hard to find with 4 digit dates. Still a little detail on the left wing (not much) and breast plate as well as the 2nd picture revealing more of the shield.

Congrats.

Thanks for the comments! Dipped imho is the least significant form of cleaning, and often won't result in a problem grade from a TPG(you see dipped coins in slabs all the time). However, a dipped coin is no longer "original" imo. Not a big problem, but not preferred either.

For me, the easiest way to tell is the overall color of the coin. A 100 year old circulated silver coin should not be white. It should have "crust", debris and toning. A dipped coin will remove the debris and toning, but if done correctly, it won't strip the luster or make the surfaces unnaturally glossy(like polishing would). If you look at the latest photos I posted of my album, you can see that the 19-s is quite a bit lighter in color than most of my other heavily circulated SLQs.

BTW, I bought this coin as a VG-8 for $113 which I think is pretty reasonable considering a lot of them are going for near $200. It is pretty close to fine imo, at least VG-10. :-)
