A friend of mine was doing a little survey: what is the difference (if any) between a collector and a numismatist.

My reply, one that he did not totally endorsed was: a numismatist is the individual that shares the information/knowledge s/he has.

This site, and a recent discussion, proves my point of view. Manning a collectors' table during a recent show made me even more convinced.

Collectors and numismatists buy and sell coins. Both dream about great deals and discoveries. Both are worried about the future of the hobby (for many reasons - lets not open wounds). Both are avid consumers of information. But while collectors ask what, where, why, when, who, how and how much, numismatists are the ones that run to the keyboard with the reply.

If you answered one single question about coins or coin collecting in your life - you are a true numismatist my friend.

Nothing against collectors: they made a numismatist out of me. Thanks

Collectors collect coins, numismatists study and research coins. King Farouk was a noted collector,
but not a numismatist. Though rare, there have been numismatists who did not collect. Most of us
fall under both categories.

Not to take away from the integrity of this thread which is so right, but on another note we are all considered 'curators' as well.
We do our best to preserve coins, as we know we can't take them with us when we 'move on'..

It's true, an excellent post t_y...
Maybe it is right to say then that Collectors treat their collection as a "hobby" while Numismatist treat their hobby as their "passion" in helping new collectors thru sharing their knowledge & experiences ...and we are all 3-in-1 :collector, numismatist, and curator!

Yahoo! - I'm a numismatist.
Really nice sentiment in the post t_y. Thanks for that.
1Cent has a great point though, there can be quite an overlap.

I feel "Collectors" is a term that can be loosely used to describe anyone who collects whatever or anything, be it stamps, coins, cards, spoons, postcards, sports memorabilia, calendars, oil cans, etc.
However, "Numismatist" is a term that is specific to only one Hobby, Greatest of 'em all!

You know what I'm talking about!

It's been a while since We had to fly to Palawan, to get away from a thphoon!. Brings back memories.
Sorry, got to remembering, and forgot to comment! I believe I would fall in both categorys, because while I have learned a great deal from the collecting, and have been taught a lot from the various forum and their members, I also try to help new members, (and old, like me), to understand the various terms, and presentation of the various errors, and varieties, and in cases, what sauses them. Such as "Hub-doubled, as oppose to machinde doubled. They are not the same, as we all know. So yes, I have to say I am both, and thankful to be able to share.

Nice to hear you have been here, Livingdinasaur... it's true Palawan is the safest place here not reached by typhoons specially the beaches of El Nido & Puerto Princesa.
And back to t_y's nice thread, I also enjoy being called a numismatist. I guess you guys would also feel the same?
